No Place Like Home

When Justin and I were planning our wedding after his New Year's Day proposal, we decided that we'd wait a year; that would give us plenty of time to plan our wedding and for me to finish my degree in December. The best laid plans often go astray, and we decided to move the date up to September. After all, why wait? Surely we could cope with half a semester of school! And we did...but that's a post for another day (or another blog).

Because we got married in the middle of the fall semester, we didn't have time for a prolonged honeymoon. We scuttled a few hours north to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, NE, and puttered around for a weekend. Just petting rays and stuff, no big deal.

So now, four months after we tied the knot, we finally went on our originally planned honeymoon! Destination? ANYWHERE warm and sunny! We settled on San Diego, because neither of us has been to California. What a wonderful trip it was. We watched sunsets, climbed a mountain, wandered along the beach, collected shells, petted anemones, and had the time of our lives.

Now I'm back home and settling in for some housekeeping, putting the house and studio back in order. The February commission swill commence shortly, so here's a quick look at our vacation. We've fondly dubbed it "Honeymoon: the Sequel."

Baby sea lions are my favorite - it looks like his PJs are too big!

Maritime Museum of San Diego

San Diego Zoo

Seahorse nursery at Birch Aquarium

Old Point Loma Lighthouse

Cabrillo National Park tide pools

Mountain hike; this is Stonewall Peak, I believe.

*For those interested, we had the most fun at

Cabrillo National Park

,

Silver Strand State Beach

on Coronado, our mountain hike at

Cuyamaca Rancho State Park

, and at the

Martime Museum of San Diego

. Cabrillo has an amazing lighthouse, miles of cliffs and tide pools, and a trail system we didn't explore. Give yourselves three or four hours for the Maritime Museum, and don't pass up the pilot boat harbor tour! We enjoyed the zoo, but in many ways the Henry Doorly zoo is every bit as good - and sometimes better. If you have a great zoo near you, skip the one in San Diego in favor of more beaches!
